In two of the previous posts, a number of laboratory apparatus readily used in construction site quality control laboratories were listed. Here, some more widely used laboratory equipments, exclusively meant for soil testing, have been mentioned.
For determination of in situ soil density, density index etc. in any construction sites, two very commonly adopted site methods are the sand replacement method and the core cutter method. The apparatus required for these two tests are: sand pouring cylinder with pouring valve and pouring cone, cylindrical calibrating container with flange, sensitive balance (preferably digital), glass plate about 1cm thick, tray with a central circular hole, core cutter (100mm dia. & 127.4mm tall), steel dolly, steel rammer. The last three items are for core cutter test while the rest are for the sand replacement test. Few other accessories like balance, scoop, tray, containers, flat knife, steel rule etc. are common for both the methods.
Laboratory apparatus required for determining water content by oven drying method are thermostatically controlled oven capable of maintaining temperature between 105¤C to 110¤C, digital balance, desiccator & desiccating agent, air tight containers.
Laboratory apparatus required for determining specific gravity and water content by Pycnometer are 900ml capacity Pycnometer with conical brass, glass rod, distilled water, digital balance.
Laboratory apparatus required for determining liquid limit and plastic limit of soil are Casagrande apparatus, grooving tools ‘a’ (B.S.) and ‘b’ (ASTM) types, digital balance sensitive to at least 0.01g, airtight containers, 425 micron sieve, thermostatically controlled oven capable of maintaining temperature between 105¤C to 110¤C, desiccator & desiccating agent, porcelain evaporating dish, flexible spatula, rod of 3mm dia.
